Dialectic of Fear, 3d graphic, 2018

The series of digital graphics indistinguishably mimicking souvenir photographs taken by people to document their presence in some place, be it a peak of the mountain, or a great waterfall. However, these pictures show monsters from various historic periods instead of normal people. The monsters served as vessels to contain the fears of an epoch. Some even constructed dialectical oppositions, according to Franco Moretti’s reading, Bram Stoker’s Dracula evokes capital, while Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein’s monster expresses the then emerging proletariat. Located in a blissful, picturesque natural setting, they stand as an utterance of hope of reconciling nature with monsters generated by the progress, of unsolvable tensions miraculously untangled.
